Maiden Erlegh School for Boys

Created by Andrea 7 years ago
My husband and Paul were roommates at an innovative and remarkable boys' school, Maiden Erlegh, in the years just leading up to World War Two. They rediscovered each other about fifteen years ago on Friends Reunited, and couldn't stop talking about their experiences at the school once they met up again. At Maiden Erlegh, boys from all over the world were able to get along happily with one another, due to a philosophy of tolerance and respect; while outside, the world was moving inexorably toward war. As I watched the two friends describe so many inspiring and amusing events, as a journalist, I knew I wanted to write about them, and I have. I met with Paul and Marietta many times; we even visited the site of the school, which unfortunately, was torn down in the 1960s, but we did visit its lake, which is now a nature reserve. Paul was always a wise, gentle and patient contributor to my research. I am sorry that the book, a novel, is nearing completion and he won't be able to see the finished product.
